Increased terrorism risks in Europe in 2018

According to a new report released by business information provider IHS Markit, foreign fighters returning from the former ‘Caliphate’ in Iraq and Syria and bringing their training and expertise back to the continent will drive an increase in the terrorism threat, particularly via the potential transformation of radical Islamist support networks into operational structures directly involved with attack plots. Though low-capability methods will remain prominent, it is likely that new and more destructive methods will emerge in the next two years in Europe, including the use of car bombs and the adoption of new technologies such as drones.

Allegion is acquiring AD Systems, a door manufacturer

Allegion plc, a leading global security products and solutions provider, has agreed to acquire Aurora Systems, Inc. (AD Systems) through one of its subsidiaries. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018, subject to customary closing conditions. “AD Systems is a natural fit with Allegion’s already strong door and door control brands – like Steelcraft, Republic and LCN, to name a few – and will further enable both of our teams to offer the best full-suite solutions to customers. Like recently acquired Technical Glass Products, AD Systems will leverage the strength of Allegion’s existing specification writing capabilities to help accelerate growth.

Shift from forensic to real-time video surveillance will improve UK public transport security

A move away from legacy analogue CCTV technology to IP video solutions will enable critical transport networks to effectively deter, detect and delay threats to ensure passenger safety. The shift to IP video surveillance is helping operators utilise real-time analytics to enhance decision making, ranging from common platform changes to the more infrequent critical scenarios, such as a station clearance in response to a security threat or other emergency. For example, machine learning technology is helping turn vast transport surveillance infrastructures into live monitoring systems. This software identifies what is ‘normal’ activity within a scene, automatically creating an alert if ‘abnormal’ activity is recognised.

IoT Security – who is responsible?

You’ve probably heard the conversation about the importance of the Internet of Things (IoT) security over and over again; the increased interconnectivity and communication between devices brings with it a greater risk for cyber threats and attacks. But has it been made clear who is in fact responsible for carrying out IoT security? According to a report from Radware, there was no clear consensus among security executives when asked who is responsible for IoT security. 35% of respondents placed responsibility on the organization managing the network, 34% said the manufacturer and 21% chose the consumers using the devices.

Eligo at Security Twenty 18 in Nottingham

The Eligo team were proud to be exhibiting once again at what proved to be yet another successful event, meeting lots of great industry talent, networking, and experiencing the market’s current strengths. We are delighted to get such positive feedback from manufacturers who are seeing a number of projects become live and more opportunities for them to get their product specified. The distributors and installers have echoed this positive message, confirming that their order books are healthy and their diaries are busy. A traditional charity fund-raising dinner the night before raised £3600 for Rennie Grove Hospice Care in memory of Alan Walker of CDVI who sadly lost his battle with cancer in the Autumn of 2017.

It was Professional Security’s first Security TWENTY 18 event of the year. We are looking forward to the next ones in Glasgow, Harrogate, Dublin & London!
