Talk Talk hit with record £400k fine over cyber-attack

Talk Talk has been hit with a record £400,000 fine for security failings that led to the company being hacked in October 2015. The Information Commissioner’s Office handed the fine and said that the attack “could have been prevented if TalkTalk had taken basic steps to protect customers’ information”. The resulted in the attacker accessing the personal information of more than 150,000 customers, including sensitive financial data for more than 15,000 people.

Apple health data used in murder trial

Health data has provided crucial evidence at a trial in Germany, in which a refugee is accused of rape and murder. Apple’s Health App accurately records steps and has been pre-installed on the iPhone 6S and newer models. Data suggesting that the subject was climbing stairs could correlate him to dragging his victim down a riverbank and climbing back up, police have said.

Redgate acquires SQL Manager tool from SysKit for GDPR

Redgate today acquired the SQL manager tool from SharePoint and SQL server solution provider SysKit. The tool will allow Redgate to provide the data privacy and protection needed within databases as well as help meet the requirements of the upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The regulation will be enforced on May 25 and organisations such as Redgate will have to comply or face fines.

Sadiq Khan-backed London tech fund announces 100th investment as it reveals it has created 1,000 jobs while saving 300

An early-stage London tech fund, backed by the mayor of London’s office, has just announced its 100th investment while revealing it has ploughed more than £100m into the capitals start-up scene. The London Co-Investment Fund (LCIF), launched in 2015, contributes money alongside select seed and venture capital funds including Seedrs, Crowdcube and Albion Capital.
