With the New Year fast approaching now is a good a time as any to wrap up the end of the month news, and let you know about our latest sessions that need filling for 2020!

We'd also like to remind you that we are currently closed and the offices will re-open on Thursday 2nd of January 2020.

Senior Doctors urge patients to vaccinate Children 

Senior doctors have urged parents to vaccinate their children, who are “super-spreaders” of flu, as vital NHS services have been flooded with patients this winter. Medical professionals have said jabs are the “best defence” against the highly- infectious disease which has hit the UK earlier than usual this year. The number of patients booking doctor’s appointments with flu-like symptoms has increased by 24% in the last week, according to the latest data from Public Health England.

UK government hands NHS data to Amazon

The British government is coming under fire for a deal to hand over NHS healthcare information to Amazon for free. Following a series of FOI requests from Privacy International and other organisations, the contract has now been released, revealing that it goes far further than had previously been admitted. Back in July, health secretary Matt Hancock announced the deal as a way to help give patients better medical advice via the Alexa home assistant.

Boris Johnson criticised as row over four-year-old’s hospital treatment deepens

Boris Johnson has come under fire for his lack of empathy over the treatment of a four-year-old boy who was left sleeping on the floor of a hospital because of a bed shortage. Jack Williment-Barr had to be covered with coats by his mother Sarah Williment to keep warm as he waited for a bed at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) with suspected pneumonia. A photograph of the youngster has been widely shared on social media, turning his treatment into a political row – just days before the polls opened for Thursday’s General Election.

Clinician wellbeing: luxury over basic human need

Gregory Dollman discusses his concerns about how so many doctors still feel that wellbeing is a luxury rather than a basic human need. In the wake of the publication in November of the watershed independent report, Caring for doctors, caring for patients, by Michael West and Denise Coia, he report’s headline finding was arrestingif you’re an NHS worker in England, you’re at a 50% higher risk of stress so severe it would be described as “debilitating”.

Not enough NHS staff for people with cancer, charity warns

Macmillan Cancer Support says patients are calling its helpline "at breaking point", feeling they cannot ask questions of the overstretched doctors and nurses caring for them. There are not enough NHS staff to meet the needs of growing numbers of people with cancer. This was followed by issues with accessing hospital or community care, including difficulties contacting medical staff or getting hold of specialist medical equipment for use at home.
