This week in our Fire & Security industry news round-up we cover a growth of perimeter intrusion and parking management markets, our security while watching World Cup games in public places, first BTC Counter Terrorism unit in Birmingham & more…

Stay safe while watching World Cup matches in public places

Ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, police have urged people watching matches in public places to ‘Know the game plan’. “We have seen that these big public events and crowded spaces can be targeted by those who want to cause harm, but I want to reassure the public that the police, partners and the event organisers are doing all we can to keep them safe and secure. Some of that protection can be seen with visible security guards and local officers and a significant amount of the security measures will be less obvious and are deployed for extra protection.” Fans can help by watching new safety videos to make themselves aware of the existing safety advice and to be ready to act if you spot suspicious behaviour and activity.

Perimeter intrusion market is growing

Marketandmarkets’ latest report predicts that the perimeter intrusion detection systems will grow from $10.73 billion in 2018 to $21.75 billion by 2023, at a CAGR of 15.2% during the forecast period. The growth can be attributed to the increasing installations of video surveillance for security systems and rising demand for remote access through the cloud and wireless technology in security systems. Based on deployment type, the open area segment of the perimeter intrusion detection systems market is projected to witness the highest growth during the forecast period. The North American region is expected to lead the market in 2018.

The future of voice-operated alarms

Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have profoundly influenced the way consumers select home security systems, leading to increased connectivity and integration with voice assistants and other smart devices. More alarm systems now offer a voice-command option, allowing users to use Alexa and other smart assistants to arm and disarm their alarm systems. IHS Markit’s latest report predicts that the share of voice-operated alarm systems will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7%from 2017 through 2022. As more intruder alarm manufacturers integrate voice assistants into their offerings, adding a smart device to an intruder-alarm package may create an additional incentive to purchasing an alarm system.

BTC Counter Terrorism unit now in Birmingham

British Transport Police (BTP) has its first regional counter-terrorism unit at Birmingham New Street station. The opening of the Midlands hub is described by the force as part of a major uplift in BTP’s counter terrorism (CT). The decision to ‘uplift’ the numbers and spread of armed police in the UK was made after Manchester and London terrorist incidents last year. “We want the public to be reassured that wherever they go on the rail network, we have highly trained people there to protect them if needed. The opening of the Midlands hub provides us with a regional base for our specialist operations teams which means we can better respond to incidents should they occur.”

Parking management market’s growth

According to the latest report by Marketsandmarkets, the parking management market size is expected to grow from USD 3.39 billion in 2018 to USD 5.15 billion by 2023, with the major driver for the upsurge in the demand of the parking management market being the requirement for seamless traffic flow and a reduction in fuel consumption and increasing motor vehicle sales. The major restraining factor in this market could be the complexity in system integration. The off-street parking is expected to hold a larger market size during the forecast period & North America is predicted to be the leading region.
