UK shrugged off Brexit with record VC investment in the first half of 2017

The UK’s tech sector has shrugged off the fallout from Brexit, scoring a record level of investment in the first half of the year, as figures from London & Partners and Pitchbook reveal that London has retained its tech crown ahead of rival cities in Europe. Results revealed that in the first six months of 2017, more than 1.3bn was ploughed into UK tech by venture capitalists, and £1.1bn of that in London alone – making that more than any other six-month period over the last 10 years.

NHS partnership with Google’s DeepMind ‘broke UK privacy law

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has found that Google’s DeepMind partnership with the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust “failed to comply with the Data Protection Act”. As part of a trial to test an alert, diagnosis and detection system for acute kidney injury (AKI), Google DeepMind received the details of approximately 1.6 million patients. Following a year-long investigation by ICO, the national data protection watchdog found a series of issues in the way in which the data was handled. This included patients being inadequately informed about their data being used as part of the trial.

EU law changes will allow more control over Facebook and Google data

A major change to EU data protection law will require Facebook and others to significantly change how people access and use personal information. These changes will be required under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into force in May 2018. (See our recent article here for more information regarding GDPR)

Oracle open sources new tools focused containers 

Oracle is helping development teams to build and operate containers with three new tools it is releasing to Open Source. Smith, Crashcart and Railcar are designed to tackle containerization challenges commonly faced. An architect for cloud development at Oracle wrote in a recent post “Containers are more popular than ever. Here at Oracle, we use containers for many of our cloud services. While preparing for containers in production, we developed tools to help with building and operating containers”.
