Amazon to open new development centre in Cambridge

Tech giant Amazon is launching a new development site in Cambridge that will house over 400 employees including machine learning scientists, knowledge engineers and data scientists. Staff working on the devices such as Kindle, Fire Tablet, Echo and Alexa will all move to the 60,000 square feet centre in Autumn 2017. Amazon has invested £6.4bn across the UK since 2010 and will employ staff in more than 1,500 “innovation-related roles” by the end of the year. Minister of State for Digital and Culture Matt Hancock announced: “This is fantastic news – Amazon’s increased investment in developing cutting-edge technology in Cambridge is another vote of confidence in the UK as a world- leading centre of invention and innovation.”

Apple Watch apps for Amazon, eBay and Google Maps disappear

These disappearances raise more questions than they answer; why didn’t most people notice? The Internet is hit with a Google Doc phishing attack

On Wednesday afternoon, the internet was hit with a massive phishing campaign targeting Google accounts. Several people online across a range of industries said they received emails containing what looked like a link to a Google Doc that appeared to come from someone they know. These, however, were malicious emails designed to hijack their accounts. About an hour after the first reports of phishing emails surfaced, Google appeared to begin preventing the emails from spreading and announced: “We have taken action to protect users against an email impersonating Google Docs, and have disabled offending accounts,”.

Sadiq Khan to appoint London’s first-ever CDO

CV’s at the ready: the Mayor of London is looking for the UK capital’s first ever chief digital officer (CDO) to transform the city’s public services. The CDO will be responsible for building in existing digital initiatives and drafting a Smart London Strategy, aimed at increasing innovation using “smart technologies”. London hosts 40,000 digital technology businesses and despite the Brexit vote hitting some tech startups, the capitals tech sector received £1 billion in venture capital investment since the leave vote was announced (according to PitchBook data). Once appointed, the CDO will work with the Mayor’s Smart London Board and City Hall to draft and deliver the Smart London Strategy, as well as alongside the Mayor’s Office, London Councils and tech firms to drive adoption of common data standards and smart city technology.
