Senior Electrical Engineer

Bristol, South West, England

£65000 - £75000 per annum

Senior Electrical Engineer (Data Centre Design)
Permanent
London, Bristol or Birmingham (hybrid)

This role is for a high-calibre Electrical Engineer who enjoys the technical "nitty-gritty" of heavy power systems. You will lead the design and delivery of robust electrical architectures for mission-critical data centres, ensuring 24/7 uptime and industry-leading resilience.

Role Overview
  • Location: London, Birmingham, or Bristol (Hybrid).
  • Basis: Full-time, Permanent.
  • Salary Guide: £60,000 – £85,000 (DOE) Critical Environment Allowance.
  • Core Focus: MV/LV Distribution, UPS Systems, Backup Generation, and Protection Coordination.
Key Responsibilities
This is a hands-on design role. You will be expected to own the electrical design from concept to commissioning:
  • System Architecture: Designing complex redundancy models (N 1, 2N, 2N 1) for Tier III and IV data centres.
  • Power Distribution: Engineering the full power chain, including Medium Voltage (MV) Switchgear, Step-down Transformers, and Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Boards.
  • Critical Power Path: Specifying and sizing UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems, Battery Energy Storage (BESS), and Backup Diesel/Gas Generators.
  • Technical Analysis: Performing protection coordination studies, short-circuit calculations, and arc flash analysis.
  • BIM & Modelling: Producing detailed 3D models and schematics, ensuring seamless integration with mechanical cooling and structural elements.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Sector Expertise: Significant experience in electrical design for Data Centres or other high-availability environments (e.g., Hospitals, Investment Banks).
  • Software Mastery: You must be highly proficient in:
    • Amtech / ProDesign (for cable sizing and calculations).
    • ETAP or SKM (for power system analysis and fault studies).
    • Revit MEP (for hands-on 3D design).
  • Regulations: Deep understanding of BS 7671 (Wiring Regs) and specific data centre standards like Uptime Institute Tiers or EN 50600.
  • Professional Status: Degree in Electrical Engineering; Chartered (CEng) or actively pursuing with IET/CIBSE.
Personal Attributes
  • Technically Granular: You are the person who double-checks the discriminating breakers and cable ratings yourself.
  • Adaptable: Comfortable working across the London, Birmingham, or Bristol hubs, with the communication skills to lead client-facing technical meetings.
  • Resilient: Thrives under the pressure of "zero-downtime" project requirements.
