Google launches £1m ‘Anti-terror fund’ to back UK projects

Google will invest a total of £1m in projects seeking to help counter online extremism in the UK. The fund is part of a $5m commitment set aside to address the emergence of extremist content posted online across the globe. Applications will open in November and judged by an independent board of advisors including academics, policymakers, educators, representatives from creative agencies, civil society and the technology sector.

IBM releases WebSphere Liberty code to open source

IBM today is moving the code that underlies its WebSphere Liberty solution for development using Agile and DevOps methodologies to GitHub, where it will be available this week under the Eclipse Public License v1. The Open Liberty code on GitHub will give developments the components they need to create Java applications and microservices, using the Java EE foundation from WebSphere Liberty and the work from the Eclipse MicroProfile community.

iOS 11 now available to download

Apple has now released the final version of iOS 11. This update is packed with new features for the iPad and new core frameworks for the iPhone. The update is currently rolling out and is available both over-the-air in the Settings app, and by plugging your device into iTunes for a wired update. iOS 11 is compatible with the iPhone 5s and later, the iPad mini 2 and later, the iPad Air and later and the most recent iPod touch.

A giant cyber-attack will happen unless we rethink security, says GCHQ

The UK should be prepared for a major cyber-attack that will dwarf the chaos of the WannaCry ransomware incident, an expert from GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre has warned. NCSC technical director, Ian Levey, warned that it’s only a matter of time before the UK needs to deal with its first ‘category one’ cyber-attack.
