Stack Overflow survey finds Go and Scala best-paying languages for Developers

According to Stack Overflow’s 2017 developer survey, the growth in popularity and Go and Scala has made them the highest-paying programming languages in the US. The growth of these languages, which can both net an average yearly salary of $110,000, can be attributed to specialist fields such as DevOps and Big Data. The results of the survey of 64,000respondents showed that the trending programming languages aligned with demand and salary for developers with these skills.

Rise of robots: Four in five retail jobs at risk of “vanishing” to automation

Citi analysts and Oxford academics have predicted that four in five retail jobs that don’t directly involve customers are at risk of being replaced by robots, as more people shop online instead of the high street. A report covering the impact of technology on work identifies that just 20 per cent of workers employed in the back-end areas of retail such as transport, logistics and warehousing are safe from automation, while nearly two-thirds of sales jobs are under threat.

Selfie app spots early signs of cancer

A team of medical clinicians and computer scientists have teamed up to create an app designed to spot early signs of pancreatic cancer. The disease, which killed Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs, is one of the hardest types to treat, but detecting and treating it early can make a big difference to survival rates. The BiliScreen app is still in development at the University of Washington but is due to be presented at a computing conference later this month.

Uber announces new CEO

On Sunday Uber’s board of directors selected Expedia’s Dara Khosrowshahi as the company’s new CEO, replacing former CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick, who resigned more than two months ago amid a series of scandals and controversies that have rocked the ride-hailing company for much of this year.
