Microsoft Infrastructure Architect

 

Summary:
 
My client's content delivery network (CDN) provides an international infrastructure to manage and distribute video content over the internet. The company is now recruiting for an experienced Microsoft infrastructure architect to analyse, design and implement improvements to the CDN.
 
 

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities are varied and include:

  • Designing and implementing Microsoft Windows systems architectures (servers, network, storage and security) to improve infrastructure and applications.
  • Designing, installing and configuring massively scalable network points-of-presence (POPs) to dramatically extend the capabilities of the existing systems.
  • Designing and implementing major enhancements to increase system resilience & reliability
  • Optimising Microsoft based systems to improve performance
  • Recommending and implementing best practice procedures for Windows networking administration.
  • Working with the software development team to improve core products
  • Capacity planning and modelling for future requirements
  • Share of on-call rota to provide out-of hours 3rd line support (approx one week in four)

Skills & Experience:

 

This role requires an in-depth understanding of Microsoft systems and the underlying hardware and network infrastructure. Experience at the OS/application level only (e.g. Active Directory design) is not sufficient for this position.

 

  • Minimum of three years experience designing, deploying and managing large-scale Microsoft networks.
  • In depth knowledge of all aspects of Microsoft networking technologies up to and including Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Any experience with Windows Server 2008 will be an advantage
  • Practical experience implementing highly available or disaster recovery infrastructures including clustering and load-balancing scenarios
  • An understanding of large scale SAN, NAS and DAS storage systems.
  • A detailed understanding of the latest generations of Intel-based server hardware
  • Demonstrable experience designing and managing systems using some of the following technologies:
    • Cisco routers and switches (experience with Cisco IOS essential)
    • Windows Media Services
    • Windows Clustering Services
    • DNS infrastructures
    • Active Directory
    • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Detailed understanding of best practice network management techniques
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with public IP networks would be beneficial
  • Previous experience working with the following would be an advantage. An interest in these areas is essential:
    • web streaming technologies
    • IPTV
